MMP270: A rant about financial advice

July 18, 2018
I am a proud member of the financial advice profession. I think that when done well, financial advice can make a massive difference in people’s lives. The problem is that too often, it is done badly, and today I’m going to let off some steam about just that subject.

A Rant About Financial Advice

If you’d have asked me when I was 18 what I wanted to be when I grew up, I’d have said a professional rock musician, touring the world playing to adoring fans. Clearly that didn’t work out, and I just talk to you people each week instead. But weirdly, far from looking back and regretting that I didn’t practice my scales more, I look back on all the events that shaped my eventual choice of career, and I thank God that everything worked out as it did.

Because I love what I do. It is the most privileged job in the world, to work with clients in the way that I do. I get to know all about their finances, their health, their families and their hopes and dreams for the future. Show me another profession that has such privileged access into people’s lives.

And because it is such a privileged position, I get very angry that not enough advisers live up to that level of trust that people put in us.

So, let me rant a little bit here, and take you with me for the ride. I hope it won’t be too self-indulgent…
