I started listening to podcasts about four years ago, and I reckon there is no better way to fill your otherwise dead time with life-changing content. When I'm cutting the grass, driving to work or walking the dog, these recommended podcasts are what I'm listening to.
I'll split them into two main groups, financial and general, because I need to maintain some semblance of staying on-topic!
Recommended Podcasts – FIinancial
Other than my own (which I do listen to each week!) there are quite a few financial related podcasts which I listen to fairly religiously:
Money To The Masses – My friend Damien Fahy has been on the MeaningfulMoney podcast a couple of times. He has a professional background in finance but took the brave step of going full-time with his website, Money To The Masses a couple of years ago now. His dedication to putting out great information on all aspects of personal finance is phenomenal, and this despite recently becoming a dad for the second time.
The Informed Choice Podcast – Another friend and colleague, Martin Bamford is a very prolific blogger and podcaster, a practicing financial planner, and managing director of Informed Choice in Cranleigh, Surrey. he is one of the most oft-quoted advisers in the national press, and with good reason. He has a knack of getting straight to the heart of current financial issues in very succinct blog posts and podcast segments. His show also gives an insight into the daily life of a busy financial planner, which balances out the practical information nicely.
Moneystepper Q&A – Graham Clark is another tireless financial blogger, whose Savings Challenge I was proud to be a part of last year and which really focused my mind on achieving some financial goals. He's running the challenge again this year, so I definitely advise you to check it out. His thrice-weekly podcast answers some varied questions about personal finance from stamp duty for limited companies to advice on your credit score. Highly recommended – you can submit your question here.
Cashflow Diary – This show by US-based investor J. Massey is strangely compelling. Even though I now feel like I have heard J's message several times, even once interviewing him for my own show, I still keep getting value from it. J's story is phenomenal, going from near-bankruptcy and squatting in a repossessed home to owning stackloads of rental property. His inspiration is Robert Kiyosaki of Rich Dad, Poor Dad fame, and I know this will put some people off, but bear with it – there is lots of value here, even for UK-based listeners.
The Property Podcast – I am not a property investor, but this subject is fascinating to me and I want to learn all I can for the day when I make my first property investment. Rob and Rob started their podcast at around the same time that I did, and they took iTunes by storm. They were also kind enough to name-check me early on and I know I have a lot of listeners that came from their show. This is THE resource for current or future property investors, and the podcast is only the start of it – they now have a print magazine and a membership site as well as tons of free information on their site.
Recommended Podcasts – General Inspiration
I've loved online business for years now, and I listen religiously to several shows that both educate and inspire. I wish I had the audience size of some of these guys…
This Is Your Life by Michael Hyatt – Michael was CEO of Thomas Nelson, one of the largest publishing companies in the US. He began blogging as a way of communicating with his many employees, and it took on a life of its own. He is now a full time online marketer and speaker, covering platform-building, self-management and productivity. His book, PLATFORM: Getting Noticed in a Noisy World, is still one of the best books for those getting started promoting themselves or their cause online. I've also bought his goal-setting course, Five Days to your Best Year Ever, for the past three years running.
Smart Passive Income – Pat Flynn's seminal podcast could fit into either category as it is clearly aimed at those looking to earn money, either full-time or on the side, using the power of the internet. Pat's is an incredible success story, and yet is no-bull, down-to-earth, real-life stuff, unlike so much of the internet hype. He is the inspiration for my posting three times per week in 2016, as he too has a blog and a YouTube channel where he offers great content for anyone looking to learn more about making money online. I never miss the SPI podcast. Ever. Amazingly, Pat also has a five-days-a-week podcast called AskPat.
The Tim Ferriss Show – Tim is the author of the Four Hour Work Week and its follow-ups. His podcast is all about reverse-engineering excellence, and he interviews top performers in every field of life, looking to learn lessons that anyone can apply. The show can be very long, but no-one else has guests like Tim – the circles he moves in are amazing. One of my favourites was with Tony Robbins.
The Model Health Show – Shawn Stevenson has a body like a demi-god and a mind to go with it. His show is a deep-dive into various aspects of health and human performance, from sleep to nutrition, even how to go to the loo for maximum efficiency (I kid you not). He really, really knows his subject and the research that goes into each episode is phenomenal. I have this feeling that in fifty years time, we will look back and realise that the whole Paleo/Primal movement, getting back to eating real-foods and learning to programme our bodies to work at peak performance, was a real turning point. I reckon The Model Health Show will one day be recognised as a vital player in re-educating the species.
The Marketing Academy Podcast – Chris Marr is a professional marketer based just outside of Edinburgh. He has recently taken a break from producing the podcast but is back with a vengeance in 2016, covering all kinds of angles relating to content marketing and social media. It's great to hear this stuff from a UK standpoint, but Chris really punches above his weight, getting interviews with some really big hitters like Mark Schaefer and Marcus Sheridan. He also runs what I believe to be the premier online marketing conference in the UK, and I'm honoured to be speaking there this year.
