MMP086: Ready, Steady, Retire! with Justin King & Martin Bamford

November 26, 2014

Here we are at session number 86, and I’m going to be chatting to two good friends of mine, Martin Bamford and Justin King. It’s also Financial Planning Week, the annual push by the Institute of Financial Planning to get personal finance and the benefits of financial planning firmly on the radar of more people than it might otherwise be. To celebrate FPW I wanted to highlight two great initiatives co-produced by Martin & Justin – one is a movie and the other is a book. Stay tuned for much more.

Interview

Martin Bamford & Justin King have both done some great work in looking into the specific challenges facing the Baby Boomer generation, who are now beginning to retire. In many ways this is the luckiest generation ever to have lived, enjoying incredible advances in medical care and technology, plus rising house prices and economic stability.

But as this generation faces retirement they are being faced with pressures which no previous generation has experienced before. Elderly parents needing care, boomerang generation kids still financially dependent, rising divorce rates and the onset of dementia.

Martin & Justin have spoken to leading experts in the various fields which deal with these issues and their findings are fascinating. The documentary, called Boom! Demographics Are Destiny is a fine piece of work, and all the more impressive given that Martin had no prior experience in filmmaking. The accompanying book, called Ready, Steady, Retire! adds some detail to the film and codifies Martin and Justin's findings. Not only that, but it provides practical help to those boomers facing the pressures which the book and film describe.

Check the Listener Offer section below for discounts on both the book and the DVD.

I hope you find the interview helpful; check out the transcript by pressing the big blue button.

Here are the questions I asked Martin & Justin:

  • Martin, can you introduce yourself and tell us how you became a financial planner
  • Justin, can I ask you the same question?
  • Martin, you have recently created a full-length documentary called Boom! Demographics are Destiny. Can you tell us why a financial planner got involved in making a film?
  • What were the biggest, most surprising findings of the documentary?
  • Justin, you and Martin have co-written a book called Ready, Steady, Retire! which will be out shortly. What was the inspiration for the book?
  • You have dealt with some major retirement issues in the book – how did you decide what to cover?
  • What was your most eye-opening moment in collating the book?
  • Martin, when I read the book, the most startling chapter for me was titled Rise of The Silver Splitter – can you tell us more about that?
  • Justin, I know you're a proponent of Financial Life Planning – what are the issues you find that comes out of your in-depth conversations with those approaching retirement?
  • Do those issues change as retirement progresses?
  • Martin, can you tell us what you hope to achieve from creating the documentary and writing the book?
  • Justin, if you could give the average 35-40 year old some advice, someone who might feel like retirement is a long way off – what would you tell them?
  • Martin – how can people get hold of the video and when?
  • Justin – How can people get hold of the book?
  • Martin – how can folk find out more about you and Informed Choice?
  • Justin – same question to you and MFP
