Safe Withdrawal Rate explained – Episode 276 [Screencast]

April 22, 2013 Leave a Comment

How much money do you need for the rest of your life? When you begin drawing from the money you have invested to supplement your income, you need to make sure that the amount you withdraw each year is not so much that, over time, the pot of money depletes to nothing. The Safe Withdrawal Rate or SWR is the rate of withdrawal which ensures you will never run out of money. In the past, some have said that this magic figure is 4% of the starting value of the portfolio, but real life has shown this not to be too simplistic. In this video (which, at 7:50 is longer than most of my videos) I explain what the SWR is and what I believe is the best way of dealing with it.
